As I write this, Boston’s first official ‘Jazz Week’ in over 25 years is winding down. As many of you know April is Jazz Appreciation Month. However when the word spread in February that Boston’s Mayor, The Honorable Thomas M. Menino would officially proclaim April 21-28 “Boston’s Official Jazz Week,” we knew it was going to be a special time. And now that it’s just about behind us, I can honestly say it was.

In one week there were over 150 jazz performances in and around the city of Boston. There were panel discussions and interviews and a great deal of collaboration behind the scenes between jazz promoters, venues, publicists, artists, agents, educational institutions, and the media. It was a great time to be in Boston and an even better time to be a lover of jazz. I hope you got out to see some of these great shows, I know I did!

Jazz Appreciation month prompted me to think about what I most “appreciate” about the genre. Jazz has given me 8 wonderful years of doing what I absolutely love to do, with memories and experiences I will take with me forever. Meeting and getting to know all of you through your generous correspondence continually inspires me to stay focused on the job at hand and propels my enthusiasm and anticipation for the upcoming season. For all of this, I am eternally grateful.

As we move forward, with Jazz Week and Month nearly behind us, I hope we can all keep this elevated awareness alive, so this beloved American art form can stay under the spotlight it truly deserves.

Well that’s all for now, until next time…we’ll catch you at the show.

Best regards,

Dayla Arabella Santurri
General Manager/Public Relations Director
Scullers Jazz Club – www.ScullersJazz.com
