Hello Everyone!
Iāve said this many, many times. We take our directives from you. So many of the artists we present and promotions we run, began with a recommendation from one of you. Now, on the occasion of our 20th anniversary, we are asking for your help again. Who would you like to see at Scullers? Or who hasnāt been around in a while that you would like us to bring back? Any other suggestions? Let me know at Dayla.santurri@hilton.com.
We are in this together, we always have been. It is through your support and guidance we are celebrating our 20th anniversary. We are looking forward to paving the road to our next milestone, hand and hand with all of you. Let's start today.
Until next time weāll see you at the show,

Hello Everyone!
So many stories start with āOnce upon a timeā¦ā so itās appropriate that Scullers story will start there. Fred, Alexandra and I have collected dozens of great stories from the two decades of history that makes Scullers what it is today. However, we know there are so many others out there. We have hosted so many first dates, wedding proposals, anniversary celebrations and family gatherings, each with a special story. Our stage has showcased so many new artists who went on to become superstars (i.e. Norah Jones, Chris Botti, Jamie Cullam) and so many legends who shared with us one of their last performances (i.e. Grover Washington Jr., Shirley Horn, Bobby Short, Kenny Rankin)and we know you were there and have memories to recount.
Now, on the occasion of our 20th anniversary we are asking for your help so we may put a collection of these memories together. We are asking that you share these memories with us (not a writer, no worries, just do your best, stories/comments short and long welcome) either via email Dayla.santurri@hilton.com or mail them to us at Scullers Jazz Club 400 Soldiers Field Road, Boston Ma 02115 and please pass this on to others who may have stories to share. We will want to have your name and contact information as well so we can get in touch with you if weād like to use the story.
We are truly excited about this project. The Scullers story is an interesting one and one that has many untold chapters. We are excited to finally put together the whole story and you are, as you know, a very big part of that.
Until next time weāll see you at the show,

Hi Everyone!
Here we are, back from our Summer hiatus--where Dayla managed to shave a few strokes off her game without cheating, Carole is all tan and glowing (and even though she said she wasn't in Vegas, no one believes her), Alexandra's got that just out of Europe air about her and our Freddy-well you know he worked the whole time...no news there.
LET THE MUSIC BEGIN!
And just when we were all really beginning to miss the music and seeing you all every night-it's all back. To TOP things off (excuse the pun here) we've got T.O.P- Tower Of Power in the house July 23-25 who will blow our newly painted doors off the hinges and remind us why they are always some of our favorite shows.
If you haven't recently, check out our coming attractions page, we have posted our complete lineup through October. Our November and December show schedule including New Year's Eve will be posted in the next week.
Can't wait to see you soon!
Until next time, we'll catch you at the show.

Hello Everyone!
I am sure you are noticing the Complimentary Ticket Offer is taking a leave of absence. So let me begin by saying its only temporary. There are a couple of reasons for the hiatus. First, there are very few eligible shows the month of June and in July, as most of you know, we take a much needed Summer break so we wanted to take advantage of this break in our schedule to retool the program.
Secondly and most importantly, the program has garnered so much attention, (we are literally receiving hundreds of requests for these tickets,) that we are having trouble with our limited office support to keep up with the demand. So we hope youāll understand our commitment to the program and our efforts to make the program continue to work for everyone.
We understand the importance of giving back to our community, and so many of whom have supported us for these 20 years. We also understand in a city at the forefront of jazz education, fostering the next generation of talented musicians, we shoulder the responsibility to make sure there are audiences here to support them for years to come.
The artists, the venues, the audiences- we all need to work together. Itās a synergy I am happy to say that has been our life blood since the very beginning. We didnāt need a recession to wake us up to the notion but we have certainly used it to step up our attention to details.
From everyone here at Scullers, we wish you a happy and safe Summer. Weāll be working hard to make sure the Fall of 2009 is one to remember for everyone!
Until next time, we'll catch you at the show.

Hello Everyone!
Years ago we used to have a short paper survey outside the club door that asked āWho would you like to see at Scullers?ā We elicited great suggestions, some of the artists we knew of and some were new to us. But when the piles for one performer would add up, we looked into it and more times than not, we booked the artist. If you are wondering who was booked as a result of these surveys, Diana Krall, Chris Botti and Andre Ward come to my mind, boy where we glad we listened!
The survey also asked what media outlets you utilized to stay informed on what was going on in the city and Scullers. Itās funny when I think back, Iād say this started in the early 90ās and was still in existence when I got there in 2000. The media categories where Print, Radio & TV. Those categories are almost archaic now. No web? No HD & Satellite Radio? No Facebook or Twitter?
Well we decided it was time to circle back to semi-annual surveys. You will soon be receiving an email survey from us and I sincerely hope you will take the time to fill it out. It will ask the same questions, āWho would you like to see at Scullers?ā and also how you stay informed (promise to update the options.) For all the reasons you already know, this helps Scullers stay tuned to what will keep you excited and engaged and keeps us relevant as the world around us changes so quickly.
Oh and in case you were wondering, Scullers is now on Facebook and Twitter
We are having a good time on both those mediums, in fact we found a āFriends of Scullersā Facebook account already set up when we signed up. A very special thanks to Raffaella Sara DiStefano for starting that and eliciting so many wonderful remarks. We added you as a friend!!
Okay Friends, I am signing off to Tweet everyone!
Until next timeā¦weāll see you at show.

Hello Everyone:
Spring time in Boston is an interesting thing. Itās interesting because as the seasons all adjust to, dare I say, a āclimate shift,ā our Spring is now a chilly affair. All the great rites of Spring, the Red Sox home opener, the Boston Marathon, a stroll in the Boston Commons, Easter and Passover they still come this time every year and we still enjoy them, but youāll have to bring your long underwear to do so.
Iām in my 30ās and I remember being able to wear pretty Spring dresses to Easter Brunch and going to Red Sox Games in April in shorts. I remember having a fantastic barbeque while I was still at Northeastern on Marathon weekend and it was hot enough to dip your toes in the Jamaica Pond.
However, regardless of the wind chill factor, it is still a wonderful time of the year. So much anticipation, for the upcoming improvements to the weather and the incredible things that happen right here in this great city of ours.
Speaking of anticipation, Scullers is about to announce our Summer and Fall schedule and in celebration of our 20th year, itās one of our best ever. We'll host Arturo Sandoval, Chuck Mangione, Howard Jones, Mindi Abair, Tower of Power, Dave Koz, Average White Band, Acoustic Alchemy and a few surprises I am just not ready to give up yet.
However, before we get ahead of ourselves, be sure to check out our website n to check out our current offerings. I hope to see you there this Spring, you can leave the long underwear at home!
Until next timeā¦weāll catch you at the show!

A NOTE FROM DAYLA,
SCULLERS GENERAL MANAGER:
Hello Everyone!
Scullers Jazz Club: 20 Years of Jazz 1989-2009, it seems unbelievable. Itās trite I know, but itās true, time flies when you are having fun with your friends. We know we are blessed to say that 2008 was our best year in our 20 year history and we are already two strong months into another exciting year.
I feel like I say this all the time, but we are so lucky and I am just so lucky too. Twenty years, and so many incredible shows, so many great friends weāve made along the way and the memories just keep on coming. Iāve been here for the last ten and what a ten theyāve been, aside from a unique and incredibly inspiring learning experience, I will always cherish the memories that have paved the way to where we are today.
You never realize what you stockpile in your brain. In fact, it wasnāt until I was asked in a radio interview to go down memory lane that I realized what Iāve accumulated from this journey thus far. I remember the afternoon the legendary Toots Thielemans and I spent two hours in the back of a minivan on our way to New Hampshire to meet Matt Lauer for an interview on the Today Show. Toots presented me with a tiny Honer harmonica and gave me my one and only lesson. I can still do a mean opening line of Sesame Street on that thing. I remember Rebecca Parris, Shirley Horn and I had quite a post show experience, a night that just wouldnāt end. Shirley had a Drambuie in one hand and a Heinken in the other, and she held court in a session that lasted into the wee hours of the morning until I literally crawled into the one of our hotel rooms. I received quite an education that night.
I remember the night Gato Barbieri just seconds before going on stage dropped his sax. We crammed the whole band into my tiny office and called every saxophonist in town we knew. Gato insisted all he needed was a flashlight and a coat hanger (I am serious here.) Finally Billy Pierce showed up with his tenor just about the time Gato proclaimed his own sax was now fully operational. One and a half hours later, the crowd was treated to one heck of a show, riding on Gatoās horn.
Oh and dare I forget, the night the music wouldnāt die!! This is really one of my favorites. Dee Dee Bridgewater wouldnāt end the set. After an incredible two hour late show, she kept taking requests from every audience member who had one. At one point, she just sang solo because the band gave up trying to remember how to play all these random songs. When hotel guests came down in their pajamas to complain, she asked them what their favorite songs were, serenaded them and by 2am, everyone in the place, including the guests in pajamas, were standing on the chairs holding up candles to a percussion of songs one right after the next. What a night!
Iāve spoken many times of the incredible firsts the club has had, when Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Jamie Cullam, Michael Buble and Chris Botti made their Boston debuts right on our stage. However, I think what resonates with me more were all the lasts. I had no idea when Ray Brown provided me his wisdom on how to improve my golf swing and we promised to play when he came back the following year, he would be gone by the end of that Summer. I wish I knew when Lou Rawls, Fred and I dined with Lydia Shire at Locke Ober, that he was already dying of brain and lung cancer and this would be his last trip to Scullers. The list goes on, Grover Washington Jr., Bobby Short, Joe Williams, Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard, Esbjorn Svensson, David āFatheadā Newmanā¦. I am so happy they played a role in our legacy and perhaps, and I say this humbly, we all played a role in theirs.
We have also made friends here that have never taken the stage, never sang a song, played a chord. They are you. Alexandra, Fred, Natalie, Matt, Jim, Carole and the whole staff--we see you all the time, we know you by name, weāve celebrated birthdays and anniversaries together and we feel as if we are all friends sharing these experiences together, and what a ride itās been. Twenty years and still rollingā¦.
As we look toward our collective future together, our Scullers family, is about to get a little smaller. Scullers is about to lose two of its biggest supporters. For many of you, Chris Coffin and John Ralston are names you might not recall and perhaps even a picture might not trigger your memory. However, Chris and John as the General Manager and Food & Beverage Director, respectively, for the hotel for the last nine years have played pivotal roles in the success of the club and their achievements have been the cornerstones supporting the club in reaching this milestone.
John is moving on to a great opportunity for him and his family and we all wish him the best. Many times I relied on him for his counsel, his level head and his thoughful prospective on just about any topic. As for Chris, he leaves Scullers and the hotel in such a vastly better place then where he found it. Everyone here, especially me, hope he knows that Scullers success and longevity is directly attributable to his hard work and dedication. I know there were days when Chris might have thought hostage release negotiation would have been a walk in the park then dealing with some of our craziness. So as we celebrate our 20th, we remember two team members whose energy, determination and long hours made this day possible.
To Chris and John, we couldn't have done it without you; you will be missed.
Until next time, weāll catch you at the show,

Hello Everyone!
Have you ever heard the saying, āWhen the going gets tough, the tough get hungry?ā Okay, well maybe it was just my Italian grandmother who made that up, but she was right, at least for me. With all the craziness around us these days, I find comfort in taking time out for special meals with friends and family, to decompress and appreciate what it is you do have.
Along that same theme, Iāve spent the last couple of weeks looking over and tasting new menu items with the Chef and his team in order to retool our New Dinner and Show offerings for the changing times. We know there are so many choices here and while most of you already know how special Scullers and our entertainment is, we want to introduce or perhaps re-introduce you to the special experience that is our Dinner and Show package is. As we reach the 20 year milestone, we thought this was a great opportunity to do just that.
I think youāll love what weāve come up with; in fact some of the suggestions that guided our decisions came directly from you. Starting in March, we will offer two dinner and show packages. During the week, weāll offer our STRAIGHT, NO CHASER menu. This two course menu offers incredible appetizer and entrĆ©e choices and will appease your palette and your purse. Weāve lowered the price to you and hope this will encourage you to join us more often.
On Friday and Saturday nights weāll feature our traditional three course dinner, the SUITE JAZZ TRIO. Weāve expanded the menu here to include many more appetizer options and soon to be your new favorite entrĆ©e choices. Weāll have a little something for you to try right as you sit down and to finish a new concept in desserts.
We hope weāll see you soon in Scullers Jazz Clubās Green Room! As always, I welcome and appreciate all comments on everything we do here at Scullers. So please share your comments with me at Dayla.santurri@hilton.com Bon Appetit!

Happy New Year Everyone!
Here we are, 2009 at last. Weāve heard so much about it, now we can see for ourselves.
If you were here with us on New Yearās Eve, I know you had a great start to the New Year. Personally, this was one of my favorites. Recalling it now, just days later, I was wondering just why that was?
Everyone looked great, lots of gorgeous dresses, interesting party hats and cheery champagne grinsā¦just like always. There was lots of hand holding and picture taking and honks from those crazy noisemakersā¦just like always. The band this year, Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers really picked it up a notch and the music, the countdown to midnight and all those romantic āGone with the Windā kisses that proceeded it were so wonderful to watchā¦just like always.
I had a birdās eye view of all the action perched at the bar with my sweetheart on one side and my Scullers family on the other, realizing there is no other place Iād rather beā¦just like always.
And that is what I found so inspiring this New Years, even with all the inauspicious warnings and predictions about 2009, we do what we always do, we persevere, this time of year in particular, by cherishing our tried and true customs, being surrounded by our loved ones and living the day that is presented to us. How wonderful is that?
On behalf of everyone here at Scullers and the Doubletree Guest Suites-Boston, we wish you and your family a Healthy and Prosperous New Year and will look forward to creating more memorable moments with you in 2009!!
Until next time, weāll catch you at the show.

Hello Everyone:
As I sit here wrapping up 2008, and preparing for 2009, the only thing that comes to mind is that infamous line from the movie classic āAll About Eveā immortalized by Bette Davis. āFasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy ride.ā I donāt remember a year in my lifetime that presented so many scary unknowns yet yielded the potential for so many history making opportunities.
Being a generation Xer, I wasnāt really committed to the thought weād be dealing with this economic slowdown for the long haul. I am child of the 80s and 90s, and the good ole days of the Clintonās (round one), prosperity and easy money. However, Iād like to think of myself as a women of the new world, so Iāve made some adjustments. Iāve started doing my own nails, ripped up the Saks card (that hurt, ladies I know you feel my pain), decided I could live without that Caribbean vacation this Christmas(we are headed to balmy Vermont-kind of the same thing, right?) and folded some āvintageā pieces back into my wardrobe rotation (if you donāt get that -never mind).
That brings me back to Scullers. I thought the Entertainment Stimulus Plan we launched last month was a good idea. What I didnāt know is how long it would be relevant. I am thinking of all those commercials on TV and radio right now talking about the āhighā price of gas, as it bottoms out to record lows day after day, I am sure those advertisers thought those rainy days were here to stay. But low and behold, on so many other fronts we are still in need of a hand and I am so happy that we can extend our complimentary ticket offer throughout the winter and for the foreseeable future. So I hope youāll turn people on to Scullers who find themselves enduring hard times. If they subscribe now to our e-newsletter theyāll receive our next edition on Jan 2nd that contains the link to the next set of free ticket offers. So please be sure if there is anyone you know that would appreciate a night out on us, direct them to our website www.scullersjazz.com to enroll.
On to 2009, and a new year around here always starts with an all star New Year's Eve celebration. This year will be no exception. Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers are so many things. Sultry songstress Lavay Smith encompasses the voice of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday and the, letās say stage presence of Marilyn Monroe. She leads this incredible swing, jump blues and jazz ensemble that will have you Jump, Jive & Wailing right into the New Year. We are offering incredible dinner and show packages AND you can upgrade to an overnight stay for an additional $99 with complimentary overnight parking. So get out your party duds, weāll bring the funny hats and champagne and join us for a very memorable New Yearās Eve.
On behalf of everyone here at Scullers, we send our warmest wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year and our most sincere thanks for making 2008 one of the best years in our nearly 20 year history. Hereās to another 20.
Until next time, weāll catch you at the show.

Hello Everyone!
Iād ask how everybody is, but I have a feeling I know the answer. āItās the economy stupid,ā oh yeah and the Pats and now the Sox! How much more can we take? For the first time in a long time I really get the feeling we are all in this together, and maybe for the first time since my grandparents were my age, we may just have to get out of it together too. Teamwork. Hmmm⦠itās not a new concept, but it kind of feels that way.
I was joking the other night that I wouldnāt mind getting a bailout too. Perhaps someone could pay my Saks bill, or Neimanās, Iād even be okay with getting bailed out of my Macyās bill. Then the conversation took an interesting and serious turn. Instead of looking for a bail out, someone asked, āā¦what is everyone doing to HELP out?ā I know what I am doing. I am spending less, a lot less and when I do spend it, I do it locally. Those aforementioned credit cards are actually getting a lot less wear and tear.
I see the change in spending here at Scullers too. Folks are opting out of the dinner for some appetizers, maybe going to fewer shows per month than usual. I understand. We understand. That is what led me to think of what the ācollective weā at Scullers could do to help out.
Starting in October, we will be releasing complimentary tickets to shows throughout each month. This is exclusively available to our email subscribers. A limited amount will be available for select shows and it is on a first reserve, first serve basis. We are offering up to 4 tickets per person because we want to introduce you to some of the newest additions on our roster of artists and in turn, we'd like you to introduce us to some of your friends.
We hope you'll use those tickets to invite friends who have never been to Scullers, maybe have never been to a live music performance or a jazz show before, or are just really struggling and could use a night out right now.
Our e-newsletter goes out the first Tuesday of every month. If you subscribe to our newsletter before then, or are already a subscriber check out the complimentary ticket button right there on the top, just click on the link. YOU MUST CLICK THE LINK TO REQUEST THESE TICKETS. There will be an option for several shows. Please give us a couple of options in case we are out of your first choice.
We want to be as fair as possible so we are limiting the complimentary ticket offer to 4 tickets per request, one request per month. We also hope if after you reserve, you will call us if you cannot make it, so we can offer it to another guest.
Times are tough and we all know weāll get out of it, but there is no reason you canāt shut CNN off, get out and have a little fun. We just hope when you do, youāll be here with us!
Until next time, weāll catch you at the show.

Hello Everyone:
I hope this finds everyone well rested from this summer. I know, not likely. Does anyone remember when you actually slowed down for summer! Well it flew by for me too!
Before I get started I want to thank Michael Lazaroff of Jazz Cruises, LLC, for taking the reigns for me on the last newsletter. We are exciting that many Bostonians will be joining us aboard the inaugural sailing (January 25-February 1, 2009) of the Playboy Jazz Cruise, hosted by Marcus Miller (www.playboyjazzcruise.com). Are you? I hope so. Please give Jazz Cruises or me a call to make your reservations.
The fall around here always means we are jam picked with some of the hottest shows of the year. Have you heard? Itās big. Chuck Mangione returns to Scullers in October after a six year absence, Tower Of Power will knock the doors down on November 20-22, The Sax Pack featuring Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters & Steve Cole make good on their promise to return after their incredible New Yearās Eve show at Scullers. This list goes on and on.
However, we take a departure from our usual post Thanksgiving Day routine this year. Instead of getting ready to pack it in for the holidays we are presenting 10 holiday themed shows with your favorite jazz and blues artists. Among those performing holiday classics along with their trademark tunes, John Pizzarelli, David Benoit, A Peter White Christmas with Mindi Abair & Rick Braun, Karrin Allyson & Johnny A-more to come. So we hope youāll plan on spending some of you holiday time with us this year!

Hello Everyone!
By the time you read this, all of us at Scullers will be off on our annual Summer break. Time to rejuvenate and get ready for an incredible five months of shows that will take us through the end of 2008.
Luba is heading with friends to St. Petersburg Russia, lucky lady. I will be staying local this year, taking some time to enjoy my little house at the beach and putting some serious miles on my new driverā¦(and seeing where it takes my golf game.) Fred, well Fred wonāt divulge where heās going on his Summer vacation. I suspect heās going to be locked away in his office in Kenmore Square working his magic on the bookings for 2009. For those who know Fred, you know it is almost impossible to get Fred to stop working.
Before we left, we put the finishes touches on our schedule through the end of the year. What a line-up!!! Fred has really done it again. Have you checked it out yet? Everything is updated online and the calendar should be arriving at your door any day now. Chuck Mangione, Roy Haynes, The Rippingtons, Tower of Power, Rick Braun & Richard Elliot, Mort Sahl, The Sax Pack & Roy Hargrove to name just a handful. We will hit the ground running later this month and canāt wait to see you there.

Hello Everyone!
When we reopened our restaurant in February and launched Scullers Jazz Clubās Green Room we knew we had an amazing product. With our insights, your comments guiding us, our terrific view, (and what about locationā¦right next to the worldās best jazz club,) we knew we had what it took to be one of Bostonās premier dining destinations.
Now that the weather is about to break, we want to extend an invitation to you to try our dinner and show package for the very first time, all over again. Youāll love not only the physical changes weāve made, but the menu has never looked or tasted so good. Created by our award winning Chef, Tony Frechette, our menu reflects inspiring twists on classic dishes utilizing the seasonās freshest ingredients.
We know we have it all, but none of it matters without you. So as an introductory Spring/Summer offer, we are spotlighting certain shows and offering discounted dinner/show packages. Thatās right, we are going to slash the dinner price by $10 per person ($35 per person, regularly priced at $45-no discount on ticket portion of package.) And unlike some other offers you may be hearing about, we are offering this regardless of the Red Sox success this year! The discount is available by calling our box office at 617-562-4111.
We are getting the ball rolling this month and in May we spotlight Holly Coleās shows on May 29th and in June weāll feature the discounted dinner/show rate on The Manhattan's June 27-28 shows. So next time you come to Scullers be sure to bring your appetite with you and weāll look forward to seeing you soon.
